My mid-western vision continues to find the western landscape an unexpected surprise. Though I have lived in California for over half of my life, it was not my original frame of reference. I am drawn to the West’s expansive views of land, the distinct nature of individual trees, and an untamed quality of place. Many of the plants that I now recognize and appreciate, were not known to me until adulthood. Confronting the unfamiliar demands a heightened scrutiny – I must slow down and look with greater intensity.
